Beginners rejoice! You can knit Helen Ardley's simple socks on two straight needles.

We know some of you find double-pointed needles tricky to use, but we don’t want you to miss out on the joys of knitted socks. With that in mind, we’re delighted to bring you this fab pair, knitted flat on two straight needles. There’s a classic ribbed cuff and some lovely Fair Isle patterning on the leg, before working a two-needle take on the traditional heel flap method. As they’re made in a DK yarn, they’re snug and cosy – perfect for keeping your toes warm on a chilly evening.

To fit: ladies’ UK shoe size 5
Heel to toe: 23cm
Cuff to base of heel: 24cm
